Qantas today announced their top nine regional cities in Australia in the running to house their proposed Pilot Academy.
Mareeba Shire’s bid was not successful however Mayor Tom Gilmore said Council will continue to advocate Mareeba Airport as an ideal regional flight training and maintenance facility.
“I must say I am very disappointed and I know the community will be. It was something we had worked dreadfully hard for. Our staff put in an enormous amount of time and effort to submit an excellent application,” Cr Gilmore said.
“While having the Qantas school based in Mareeba would certainly have been a boost to the Airport redevelopment, we will continue to see the growth and development occur.”
The works in developing the new precinct at the western end of the runway are progressing well.
“We are certainly experiencing a high level of interest in the blocks being created.” Cr Gilmore said.
