Mareeba Shire Council actively encourages residents to be prepared for a range of disasters not limited to bushfires, cyclones and severe weather events. Council is dedicated to keeping informed through a variety of mediums to minimise their risk in the event of an emergency.
Mareeba Local Disaster Management Group
Under the Disaster Management Act 2003, the Mareeba Shire Council Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) plans to reduce the impact on the community from disaster events The LDMG is chaired by the Mayor and is made up of multiple agencies, organisations and industry representatives. The membership of the group includes core and support advisory members chosen for their roles and responsibilities in the region, their specialist knowledge and to distribute awareness and information pertaining to disaster management.
The LDMG prepares the Local Disaster Management Plan and has a range of other sub-plans for all stages of Disaster Management: Prevention, Preparation, Response and Recovery.
In the event of a disaster, the LDMG will activate the Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC) to assist in operational activities such as the coordination of requests for assistance from the community, acquisition of resources and distribution of public information and warnings.
