Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin has written a letter to the State Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui expressing concerns over the recent increase in crime and antisocial behaviour in Mareeba, urging the State to take action.

At last week’s Council meeting, a motion was carried to pen a letter to the local Member regarding the spike in vandalism and crime as this is a State responsibility.

“Council and our community are very concerned about the crime we are experiencing in Mareeba,” Cr Toppin said.

“We are requesting the State to tackle this issue from a systemic societal and legal perspective that needs to be addressed urgently.

“Last year Cynthia set up a taskforce regarding crime and I would like to see that group reinvigorated so all agencies can take a coordinated approach to deal with this issue,” Cr Toppin said.

A council vehicle was recently vandalised.
