Australia Day Awards 2018 – Nominations Now Open

NOMINATIONS for the 2018 Mareeba Shire Council Australia Day Awards are now open.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the awards are an opportunity to recognise Mareeba Shires’ unsung heroes who have done extraordinary things for or on behalf of the community.

“This year we would be delighted if nominations focus on the quiet achievers, who are rarely recognised or rewarded for their efforts,” Cr Gilmore said.

“We all know someone who puts in an extraordinary effort anonymously and quietly on behalf of the community.

“This year, let’s celebrate those people.”

Nominations are not bound by specific categories this year. The judging panel will determine awards based upon application, in order of merit.

Awards will be given to groups, events or individuals for outstanding contributions in the sporting, community and cultural fields.

“We strongly encourage everyone to nominate someone they know to be considered for an Australia Day Award,” Cr Gilmore said.

There will be a special ceremony to celebrate the nominees and winners at the Mareeba International Club on the evening of Thursday 25 January 2018. The event will also include a Citizenship Ceremony.

Nomination forms are available from the Mareeba Shire Council Customer Service Centres in Mareeba and Kuranda, or online at msc.qld.gov.au. Entries must be received by 3.00pm Monday 18 December 2017.
