Mareeba Shire Council is one step closer to developing a Community Hub in Mareeba after a successful grant application was announced last week.
The Queensland Government has backed the project, committing over $1 million towards the project which will see a new recreation facility, modern library and function area.
Mayor Tom Gilmore said the project is still in the planning phase however news of the successful grant application will enable Council to move forward to the next stage of the development. “The proposed Community Hub will provide the community with a multi-purpose space for services and activities including sport and recreation, a new library and other associated community activities,” he said.
While concerns have been raised about the re-location of the library, Cr Gilmore said Council was very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to redevelop an existing facility to cater for the growing needs and expectations of the community.
“The current library has been in place nearly 30 years and is simply not fit for purpose any longer. Council has considered many options in detail, all of which are beyond the community’s capacity to pay,” he said.
“Unfortunately, not all Council services, including libraries, swimming pools, parks and recreation areas are easily accessible to all residents.
“The new facility will have guaranteed parking and improved disability access.”
Councillor Gilmore said this project would not be possible without the support of the Queensland Government.
“I have to say, we are so indebted to the Queensland Government for this funding, it has made this all possible,” he said.
“The Hub will be fully grant funded, so we have to say thank you very much – it’s an extraordinary commitment and an extraordinary investment in our community.”
In exchange for the Anzac Avenue facility, Council will incorporate a new club house and bowling green.
