In June 2024, Council completed the implementation of a pilot project aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety, connectivity and accessibility in Mareeba through improvements to the walking and cycling network.
Background
The Mareeba Lighter Affordable Effective (LAE) project introduced new walking/bike paths, upgraded footpaths and intersections, improved road crossings, added accessible kerb ramps, and addressed the “missing links” in the walking route between Amaroo Park and the intersection of Lloyd and Walsh Streets.
Completed LAE Works:
The following sites have been upgraded as part of the LAE project:
- Constance and Atherton Street Intersection– safer pedestrian crossings.
- Lloyd and Constance Street intersection– a new accessible kerb ramp and crossing upgrades.
- Lloyd and Walsh Street intersection– new kerb ramps for accessibility and a pedestrian island/ safety refuge.
- Ceola Drive– a walking/bike path along the western side of Ceola Drive. Barrier edging and new sections of footpath to separate pedestrians from vehicles.
- Anzac Avenue– a walking path and marked parking bays at the missing connection near Durston Street.
These improvements align with Council’s Walking Network Plan for Mareeba and the Anzac Avenue Local Area Traffic Management Plan. Many of these upgrades were identified by the local community during the planning process.
The LAE project provides a continuous 4.5 km route, linking Mareeba’s Amaroo area with the Bicentennial Lakes and High School areas.
The Lighter, Affordable, Effective (LAE) pilot project delivered cost-effective, timely solutions, improving the walking, and riding experience more quickly than through traditional, larger-scale upgrades.
The Mareeba LAE project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.
