Mareeba Infrastructure Projects Update

By June 29, 2026No Comments

Projects are well underway in Mareeba, with improvements to water mains, stormwater systems, and the sewer network, as well as the delivery of new footpaths and safer pedestrian access for the community.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said residents who have recently driven through town will notice the hive of activity in Mareeba with projects being delivered.

“It is fantastic to see so much happening in town at the moment, with many long-term projects being implemented,” said Mayor Toppin.

Member for Cook David Kempton said it was positive to see these essential upgrades progressing in Mareeba, from water and sewer improvements to safer pedestrian access.

“These projects will not only enhance the day-to-day lives of residents but also support the town’s growth for years to come,” Mr Kempton said.

The 2025-26 Watermain Replacement progressed well with construction now completed on Kenneally Road and surrounding streets to upgrade water mains. This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, and Mareeba Shire Council with assistance from the Queensland Government. It is part of the Australian Government’s Water Infrastructure for Sustainable and Efficient Regions (WISER) initiative.

Moving further north, works have begun on the Walsh Street / Rankin Street traffic and pedestrian safety project, with the crew nearly completing the section at Constance Street near the Hastie Street intersection, which is the first stage of the stormwater drainage upgrade. The team is now focusing on the next section on the corner of Rankin Street and Walsh Street. This project will see the roundabout at Rankin Street / Walsh Street reconfigured, a new pedestrian crossing between Coles and K-Hub, new lighting and landscaping and is due to be completed later this year. This project is funded by the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS), the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery (RTR) Program and Mareeba Shire Council.

In recent months, crews along Constance Street have been undertaking a major project to upgrade the sewer main along the entire length of the street, which will be completed in December 2026. This project is jointly funded by Mareeba Shire Council and the Queensland Government.

Another project in the works is the Lloyd Street sewer network reconfiguration to address the collapse of the sewer during Cyclone Jasper. This project is scheduled for completion in June 2027. The project is funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery and Funding Arrangements.

The Atherton Street sewer pump station upgrade works have recently commenced which will help move wastewater to the treatment to meet current and future capacity for dwellings and is scheduled for completion by early 2027. The project is funded by the Queensland Government’s Residential Activation Fund and Mareeba Shire Council.

Works are due to begin soon for the connection of the missing link of footpath on the western side of Constance Street between the Theatre Hall and just past Hort Street. This is funded by the Queensland Government’s Walking Local Government Grants Program and Mareeba Shire Council.

Council sincerely thanks our residents for their patience and understanding during these essential upgrades. Council also gratefully acknowledges the support and funding provided by the Australian and Queensland governments, which make these important improvements possible.
