Items of Interest – Ordinary Council Meeting, 20 August 2025

The following items were addressed at the Ordinary Meeting of Mareeba Shire Council on Wednesday, 20 August 2025.

Major Infrastructure Updates

At the August Ordinary Council Meeting, an update was provided on a series of significant infrastructure projects underway across the region, with a strong focus on road safety, essential services and open space enhancement.

Acting Mayor Cr Lenore Wyatt said the projects reflect Council’s strategic investment in critical infrastructure.

“These upgrades will improve liveability across our Shire, from critical road upgrades to vital water main works, Mareeba Shire Council is committed to maintaining our assets and future-proofing our region,” said Acting Mayor Wyatt.

 

Clohesy River Bridge Repairs – Koah

Council has approved an additional $150,000 for critical repairs to the Clohesy River Bridge on Barron Street, Koah. Works will include:

  • Rectification of a sunken concrete abutment
  • Realignment of the bridge structure
  • Replacement of the timber deck and running planks

The works, identified through long-term monitoring, will ensure the ongoing safety and functionality of the bridge.

Works are scheduled to commence Monday, 1 September 2025 and are expected to be completed by Thursday, 11 September 2025. The bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic during this period. Pedestrian access will be maintained, and temporary parking will be provided at both ends of the bridge.

Nearby residents and emergency services will be notified prior to works commencing.

 

Leadingham Creek Road Upgrade – Dimbulah

Upgrade works are now underway on Leadingham Creek Road, a key rural collector route servicing heavy agriculture, sugarcane haulage, tourism and the Dimbulah Aerodrome.

Funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments in partnership with Mareeba Shire Council, the project will address safety and deterioration issues by:

  • Widening and sealing 9.8km of road
  • Realigning tight curves and steep sections
  • Improving drainage and road shoulders

Current works include site preparation and the establishment of a side track for the Sandy Creek culvert extension.

Kenneally Road Gravity Sewer Main Upgrade – Mareeba

To support current and future development in Mareeba, Council is upgrading 2.35km of critical sewer main along Constance Street and Kenneally Road.

The upgrade will:

  • Reduce the risk of sewage overflows
  • Protect public health and the environment, including the Barron River
  • Future-proof infrastructure for the growing community

Construction began in June 2025, with significant progress already made, including works within Mareeba State Primary School grounds. Installation of a rising main is also underway, forming part of the upcoming Lloyd Street sewer project.

Construction of a new sewer manhole to service new gravity sewer line

 

Northern Bicentennial Lakes Upgrade – Mareeba

The Northern Bicentennial Lakes Precinct is undergoing a transformation to enhance water quality, public safety, and community use of this key open space in Mareeba. The project is funded by the Australian Government and Mareeba Shire Council.

Key improvements include:

  • New car parking on Keeble Street
  • Reshaping of the northern lake to improve water flow and reduce stagnation
  • A viewing deck with interpretive signage
  • Upgraded and new pedestrian pathways
  • Installation of new park facilities: picnic shelters, seating, drinking fountain, and solar lighting

Preliminary works began on 21 July 2025, with contractors undergoing excavation works of the eastern mound, carpark subgrade establishment and rock delivery in preparation for reclamation works. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2025.
