Mareeba Shire Council is inviting Mareeba Shire residents to provide feedback on whether to retain or remove the pedestrian safety installations on Ceola Drive, Mareeba.
In 2024, pedestrian safety installations were constructed at five sites to create a continuous and safe walking and cycling route, connecting key destinations across Mareeba.
The “Lighter, Affordable, Effective” project aimed to enhance the walking and cycling experience by trialling more affordable and timely solutions compared to traditional, higher-cost upgrades. The intent was that these treatments could be implemented, modified, replaced or removed quickly, easily and at low cost, if required.
Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said that while the changes at most of the five sites have been well received, community response to the Ceola Drive installations has been mixed.
“If you live in the area or walk or cycle along Ceola Drive, now is the time to have your say on whether the safety installations should be kept or removed,” Mayor Toppin said.
Mayor Toppin added that traffic monitoring has shown a reduction in drivers exceeding the speed limit shortly after the installations were put in place.
“Drivers exceeding the speed limit has been an issue on Ceola Drive for a number of years. Councillors are weighing the reduction in traffic speed against the community’s response, and we are genuinely seeking community input to help guide Council’s decision-making,” Mayor Toppin said.
Mareeba Shire residents are encouraged to complete the short survey available on Mareeba Shire Council’s website by Sunday, 19 October 2025.
