Mareeba Shire Council and Councillors are receiving considerable amounts of correspondence/communication pertaining to objections or concerns regarding the COVID-19 Directives as issued by the Queensland Government and Chief Health Officer. As Council has no powers with regard to this matter such correspondence is better directed to the State Government and your Local State Member of Parliament. Council and Councillors will not be responding to correspondence/communication received in this regard.
Mareeba Shire Council is committed to supporting Queensland Health as the lead agency responding to novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and they will ensure our community is kept safe. Under the advice of the Chief Health Officer, Council supports the intent of the general COVID-19 vaccination to protect the Shire’s population and neighbouring communities. Importantly, Council is obligated to follow any health direction made by the Queensland Government.
Council also supports the communities’ right to voice their concerns to the State Government, regarding issues such as the restrictions imposed on unvaccinated people.
At a Special Council meeting on Thursday 2 December Council adopted the following motion.
Motion: That Council respectfully requests that the Premier and State Government take into account the concerns of some individuals and some members of the business community and reconsiders the decision to introduce restrictions for unvaccinated people from 17 December 2021.
Moved: Cr Angela Toppin
Seconded: Cr Kevin Davies
We encourage staff, contractors and visitors to Council to be vaccinated.
It is important to note there are no current restrictions on using Council services and as such all our venues and facilities are open to all.
