Mareeba Shire Council is inviting passionate community members with event experience to nominate for the Great Wheelbarrow Race Advisory Committee.
The annual Great Wheelbarrow Race is one of the Shire’s most iconic community events, drawing hundreds of participants each year to race from Mareeba to Chillagoe across three days in May. Since 2007, the race has raised nearly $3 million for a wide range of charities.
The Advisory Committee plays a vital role in the planning and delivery of the event. From logistics and communication to on-the-ground support during race weekend, committee members work closely with Mareeba Shire Council to ensure the event is successful, safe and community-focused.
The Great Wheelbarrow Race Advisory Committee Chair, Mareeba Shire Councillor Ross Cardillo, said community involvement is the key to the race’s ongoing success.
“The Great Wheelbarrow Race is more than just a sporting event—it’s a celebration of community spirit,” Cr Cardillo said. “We are calling on people who are passionate and skilled in events to help shape the future of this incredible event.”
If you want to make a difference and contribute to one of the most celebrated events in Far North Queensland, Council encourages you to submit your nomination.
Nominations close Sunday, 20 July 2025.
