Mareeba Shire Council is pleased to announce the revitalisation of the northern section of Bicentennial Lakes, between Keeble Street and Rotary Park, Mareeba.
The upgrade has transformed this popular community space with a range of new recreational improvements, including footpaths, a viewing platform, lighting, additional car parking, a picnic shelter and seating areas. New interpretative signage will be installed over coming weeks.
The project also delivered waterway improvements to enhance water flow and quality, along with vegetation works on the central island to support the health and sustainability of the lakes.
The project is supported by $849,197 funding from the Australian Government’s Growing Regions Program.
Assistant Minister for Northern Australia, Senator Nita Green, said the Australian Government was proud to invest in the revitalisation of the northern section of Bicentennial Lakes.
“Our government is investing in regional communities and the Bicentennial Lakes upgrade in Mareeba is a great example of this.
“Practical improvements to local infrastructure make a real difference to communities.
“The refreshed Bicentennial Lakes is a great space that locals can enjoy and it makes Mareeba an even better place to live.
“I am so proud to be part of a government that cares about and invests regional Queensland communities.”
Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said the works provide residents and visitors with an enhanced recreational area while protecting the natural values of the site.
“Bicentennial Lakes is a much-loved community park, and these improvements have created an even more attractive and accessible space for residents and visitors to enjoy,” Mayor Toppin said.
“The project has delivered significant upgrades, including new footpaths, a viewing platform, improved lighting and additional visitor facilities, all while maintaining a strong focus on environmental sustainability.”
“The waterway and vegetation works will help improve the long-term health of the lakes ecosystem, ensuring this important recreational area can be enjoyed for years to come.”
“Council thanks the community for its patience throughout construction and looks forward to seeing people make the most of these new facilities,” concluded Mayor Toppin.
