After extensive community engagement with the Julatten and Mount Molloy community, Mareeba Shire Council is pleased to announce that a pump track will be built at Geraghty Park, Julatten.
The play equipment at Geraghty Park was earmarked for renewal as part of Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Strategy. The existing playground is at the end of its useful life and will be removed. Council secured funding through the Queensland Government Works for Queensland 2024-27 Program to construct a new play option for the community.
The new play option project created much discussion in the community, with some requesting a new playground and others advocating for a pump track.
To find a way forward for the project, as only one option could be built with the funding, Council put the decision into the hands of the Julatten and Mount Molloy community and invited them to make their views known through a survey.
Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said it was important to the Councillors that the residents were given the opportunity to vote for their preferred play option and to have a say on the future of Geraghty Park.
“Residents from Julatten and Mount Molloy were encouraged to complete a survey and vote for a new playground or a pump track,” Mayor Toppin said.
Mayor Toppin added that both options have strong community benefits however, as per Councils commitment when putting out the survey, the option that received the highest number of votes will be built.
“A total of 239 votes were lodged and the results were extremely close. Both options were well supported by the community. The pump track received 122 votes, the playground 117 votes. The community has spoken and Council will build a pump track at Geraghty Park.”
It is expected construction of the new pump track will commence after the upcoming wet season.
