The off-leash dog park is located on Doyle Street Mareeba, across from the back entrance of Davies Park with access available 24hrs, 7 days a week.
The park provides ample space for dogs to play while their owners have a bench for resting. The park is securely fenced with trees for shade, water fountains for people and dogs, a bin, and bags for owners to clean up after their pets.
Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the park filled a need in the community, which had been expressed to council over the years.
“As we become more urbanised, people do not have spaces for their dogs to run and play,” he said. “I took it on board and thought it really was time that we did this and provided a facility for the pups.”
Councillor Gilmore said the park was a “big win” because it turned an underused area into a multipurpose facility. He said the space inside the park could still be used on occasions such as during Christmas in July for grey nomads to park their caravans.
“All we have to do is open the gates and we can use it for that purpose and ask people not to bring their dogs here for three or four days,” Cr Gilmore said. “That’s not hard and that makes this a multipurpose facility.”
