In-house Legal Officer (Maternity Replacement)

The role:

The In-house Legal Officer works as part of the Governance & Compliance team, under the guidance of the Manager Development & Governance and Senior Compliance Officer, to provide legal services and advice across a broad range of Council areas.

Council’s In-house Legal Officer will be taking a period of maternity leave so we are looking for a maternity leave replacement for up to 12 months.  We appreciate we may not be able to find a suitable replacement to perform all of the duties and responsibilities of the role.  If you are not suitably qualified to take on all of the duties and responsibilities of the role but could perform a significant portion, or if you require some flexibility around full-time hours, we would still like to hear from you.  Remuneration will be adjusted accordingly.

What we are looking for:

  • You will have ideally completed a Bachelor of Law undergraduate degree or an equivalent postgraduate qualification in Law but we may consider candidates who, for example, have worked in paralegal roles and have demonstrated experience in undertaking legal research, interpretation and application of legislation and the provision of legal advice
  • You will have an outstanding level of integrity and commitment to confidentiality and a demonstrated understanding of ethics as they apply to solicitors with a high ability to research, interpret and apply legislation and case law to provide informed and accurate advice
  • You will need to be able to demonstrate significant knowledge and experience of the law generally, the principles of law, the practices and procedures of all courts and tribunals, including courts of appeal, and of the law relating to local government practice
  • You will have demonstrated experience with, and an understanding of, the role of a solicitor within a corporate governance framework including highly developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate legal advice

*In accordance with section 92 of the Queensland Industrial Relations Act 2016 the successful applicant will be employed as a replacement employee for the term of the incumbent employee’s maternity leave.  Although leave may be approved for a period of 12 months, it is important to note that the employee has the right to request to return to work earlier or later than initially approved.  When the incumbent advises us of her intention to return to work, we will provide a minimum of two (2) weeks’ notice of completion of this temporary placement.
