Infrastructure works
The Mareeba Shire Council has completed a mixture of Parks and Gardens maintenance as well as bridge works during the month of January.
“Work commenced on the Grove Creek Bridge on Speewah Road in November. Following an assessment of the bridge a number of issues were identified resulting in the immediate imposition of a 5 Tonne load limit on the bridge,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said.
“Given that this is the only access into Speewah, urgent works had to be undertaken to enable heavier vehicles to enter Speewah. Work is progressing on schedule and the contractor will stockpile the stage one concrete girders this week, with the intention of placing them early next week,” Cr Gilmore said.
“This is welcome news to everyone who uses those roads, and this upgrade has a number of benefits for residents, industry and road users. For instance, once this bridge is complete, work can begin on the installation of the 60 metre NBN tower which will service the area.” he said. “This major piece of important infrastructure is being partly funded by the Commonwealth Government with a grant of $425000.”
“Parks and Gardens has carried out general repairs and maintenance at the Bi-Centennial Lakes, Town Hall Park, Dimbulah, Centenary Park, Arnold Park, Mareeba. General repairs and maintenance has also been carried out on Kuranda Parks, Library, CBD and streets,” Mayor Gilmore said.
“The installation of an underground electrical conduit at Therwine Street in preparation for the undergrounding of power commenced in November and was completed this month with minimum disruption to business and tourism in the town.. My congratulations to the council workforce for their efforts in very trying conditions. The work extends the full length of Therwine Street from the intersection of Coondoo Street to the bottom of Therwine Street.,” Cr Gilmore said.
Mareeba Sewerage Treatment Plant
Mareeba Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) Refurbishment Design and Construct Tender has been awarded to Downer Utilities.
“The STP Critical Infrastructure Upgrade has begun and the Rising Main works commenced 11 January with the delivery of the ductile iron piping, with the majority of pipes and fittings now located on site,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said.
Installation of the pipes began this week, starting from the sewerage plant end on Hickling Avenue. The under bore of the highway and the rail corridor will commence within weeks,”
