MAREEBA will welcome hundreds of visitors to the town when the annual Christmas in July event kicks off later this month.
Grey Nomads will be rolling into Mareeba to take part in the 20th annual Christmas in July celebrations to be held from 27-30 July at Davies Park. The four-day event is hosted by the Far North Nomads Chapter of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia and supported by Mareeba Shire Council.
Mareeba Shire Mayor, Tom Gilmore said the event is always anticipated by many and has grown to be one of the Shire’s most significant events. “This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this special event which sees a welcome influx of visitors to our community,” Cr Gilmore said.
“Not only do we have the opportunity to showcase our beautiful part of the world, we can sometimes take for granted, we also welcome the economy benefits, with an increase in trade for many businesses and tourist attractions across the Shire.
“Mareeba has a great reputation with the travelling public, and we welcome them with open arms.”
Organiser Milford Virtue is welcoming any CMCA member to attend the rally and join in celebrating the milestone. “We have had as many as 425 Motor Homes attend our rally, and we would like to break that this year,” Mr Virtue said.
“The rally has grown over the years to become one of the member’s favourites, and they travel from all over Australia to attend.
“The Mareeba Shire is a diverse region with lots of things to see and do, as well as offering great weather with very mild winters, which is why people love retuning again and again.” he said.
On Saturday, there will be a Christmas in July dinner, catered by the Mareeba Leagues Club, followed by an open day on Sunday from 9am to 3pm. The public is invited to attend the open day at Davies Park on Sunday 30 July. There will be a wide variety of information stalls from local businesses and tourist destinations, market stalls, live entertainment, food and more. For those interested in attending, entry is by gold coin donation, which will be divided between the Mareeba SES and the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.
