Australia Day Award Winners 2018

Mareeba Shire Council hosted its annual Australia Day Awards ceremony on Thursday 25 January 2018.

Family and friends gathered at the Mareeba International Club to celebrate the many achievements and wonderful contributions made by their local heroes.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said the annual event is an opportunity to recognise the quiet achievers in the community. “It is so very important to acknowledge not just the winners, but the 27 nominees for their outstanding achievements and contributions,” he said.

“Our award winners are all very deserving recipients. They are largely unsung heroes who give so generously of their time to enhance the community, in one way or another.”

As an entertainer, educator and community volunteer, Pam Strelnikoff was named Citizen of the Year for 2018. The talented musician has been performing at community events for decades, volunteering many hours for others’ enjoyment.

“Pam is recognised for her energy, commitment and her selfless contribution to the wider community,” Cr Gilmore said.

The talented pianist continues to perform at the Mareeba Garden Settlement after 65 years, bringing enjoyment to the residents who love to sing along.

“Pam is seen as giving, caring and professional and is generous with her time – nothing is ever too much trouble,” Cr Gilmore added.

Former Mareeba State High School student Bradley Newlands was awarded Young Citizen of the Year, recognised for his contribution to his school and the local community in many areas.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said Bradley is a young leader with enthusiasm and potential. “Bradley is a genuine all-rounder,” he said.

“His participation in the school community, with the Air Force Cadet Squadron, School Concert Band as well as his involvement at all levels in his local community speak of a young man of many wonderful achievements.”

The talented sportsman is also a Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award recipient – the world’s leading youth achievement award. It equips young people for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests.

Mayor Tom Gilmore congratulated all recipients saying he was very proud of all the nominees and winners as they all demonstrate qualities of mateship, commitment and dedication.
